ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (June 30, 2007) – Donald J. Lucarelli & Starlight Stable’s Throng got away with setting a slow pace and had enough left in the tank to hold off the fast-closing Demeteor to win the $46,800 Dr. Fager Stakes by a nose Saturday at Arlington Park. The Todd Pletcher-trained son of Silver Deputy was ridden by Rene Douglas and got the mile and an eighth over Polytrack in 1:51.04.

“Rene gave him a good ride,” said Michael Dilger, assistant trainer to Pletcher. “We got a nice, slow pace and that played right into our hands.”

The Dr. Fager was the first win in five starts this year for the 4-year-old gelding who ran second three times including a runner-up finish over this track in the $47,700 Timeless Native Stakes. The $26,880 winner’s share boosted Throng’s bankroll to $205,873.

Demeteor angled out in the stretch to post a strong challenge to the winner but was unable to get by and had to settle for the place spot, six lengths clear of third-place finisher Restless Mon. Sidcup, Mr. Pursuit and Air Academy completed the order of finish in the six-horse field.

Sent off at odds of 9-10, Throng returned $3.80, $2.60 and $2.10. Demeteor paid $4.60 and $2.80. Restless Mon paid $5.
