TOM ARCHDEACON RALLIES TO WIN AWAD STAKES

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (May 28, 2007) – George Smith & John Royer’s Tom Archdeacon found room along the fence turning for home and held safe a late run from Pirate Saint to win the $48,450 Awad Stakes by three-quarters of a length at Arlington Park on Memorial Day in front of a holiday crowd of 11,984. Larry Sterling Jr. was aboard the Austin Smith-trained son of Aljabr who covered the mile over yielding turf in 1:37.52.

“It wasn’t easy but we finally got through there,” Sterling said of his trip aboard the 3-year-old colt. “Austin has done a great job with him.”

“We had some bad luck with him last year and this year,” Smith said of Tom Archdeacon, who won for the second time in eight career starts. He earned $29,070 to boost his bankroll to $66,387.

Smith added that the colt would be pointed toward the Grade III Arlington Classic for his next start. The Arlington Classic, the first leg of Arlington’s Mid-America Triple, will be run on Saturday, June 23.

Pirate Saint was second in the 11-horse field, a length clear of Lovango. Chief Thief, Eighteenthofmarch, Navy Wings, Slam My Heart, Bullara, Awesome Hero, Smart Cart and Speedway completed the order of finish.

Tom Archdeacon paid $19.80, $8.20 and $5.20. Pirate Saint returned $14.20 and $8.40. Lovango paid $9.20.
