Arlington Park Stakes Advance: Arlington-Washington Lassie (GIII)

Contact: David Zenner

Competitive Field Includes Wonderful Luck, Honest to Betsy & Dreaming of Liz

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (Sept. 6, 2007) – A well-matched field of 11 2-year-old fillies including 3-1 morning line favorite Vinery Stables’ Wonderful Luck passed the entry box Wednesday morning for Saturday’s Grade III $150,000 Arlington-Washington Lassie, Arlington’s main event for juvenile fillies.

The Lassie, a one-mile race on the main track, is one of three Grade III races that comprise Arlington’s inaugural Ladies Day card that also includes the $200,000 Pucker Up Stakes for 3-year-old fillies and the $150,000 Arlington Matron Handicap for older distaffers.

A daughter of Trust N Luck, Wonderful Luck comes in off a second-place finish in the $50,000 Anna M. Fisher Debutante at Ellis Park last month. Earlier this year, the Steve Asmussen-trained filly earned black type when capturing the $77,000 Cinderella Stakes over Hollywood Park’s Cushion Track. The chestnut filly broke her maiden over Keeneland’s Polytrack in April and is a perfect two-for-two on synthetic surfaces. Robby Albarado has the mount.

Sure to gain support at the mutuel windows is Blue Devil Racing Stable’s Honest to Betsy. The daughter of Yonaguska ran fourth in the Grade II Adirondack Stakes at Saratoga on Aug. 15 after breaking her maiden at Belmont Park a month earlier. Trained by Dale Romans, she will be ridden Saturday by Arlington’s leading jockey Rene Douglas.

The locally based Dreaming of Liz, who races for Arlington’s leading owner Frank Calabrese, stretches out to a mile after breaking her maiden with an eye-catching seven-length tally at six furlongs on Aug. 10. Since breaking her maiden, she has rattled off a string of bullet drills including a :58.60 clocking for five furlongs on Monday. The homebred daughter of El Prado is out of 1997 Lassie victress Silver Maiden and will be ridden Saturday by her regular jockey E. T. Baird.

Others in the Lassie (with jockeys listed) are: Lloyd DeBruycker’s Rasierra (Seth Martinez); Team Victory’s Startswampindowski (Chris Emigh); McKee Stables Inc.’s Love Buzz (Mark Guidry); Three Kings Racing Stable’s Pretty Persuasion (Jesse Campbell); Carl F. Pollard’s Minewander (Eusebio Razo Jr.); William Stiritz’ Pegasus Prospect (Corey Nakatani); Naveed Chowhan’s La Wildcat (Dana Whitney); and Mrs. Rebecca Hillen’s Eat Pie (James Graham).

Arlington Park – the Chicago area’s premier Thoroughbred racetrack located in Arlington Heights, Ill. – will run a 94-day meet in 2007 from Friday, May 4 through Sunday, Sept. 16. Arlington Park, whose parent company is Churchill Downs Incorporated (Nasdaq: CHDN), also operates nine off-track, simulcast-wagering facilities: Trackside Arlington Park (Arlington Heights), Trackside Chicago, Trackside Quad City Downs (East Moline), Trackside Rockford, Trackside Waukegan, Fat Sam’s Bar & Grill featuring Trackside OTB in Lockport, Lucky’s featuring Trackside OTB in South Elgin, Nicolino’s featuring Trackside OTB in McHenry and The Inferno featuring Trackside OTB in South Beloit.
