Arlington Park Stakes Advance: Arlington Matron (GIII)

Contact: David Zenner

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (Sept. 6, 2007) – Richard L. Duchossois’ Round Heels and Jim Tafel LLC’s Coolwind will likely vie for favoritism when they top a field of six older distaffers entered in Saturday’s Grade III $150,000 Arlington Matron Handicap.

The Arlington Matron, a mile and an eighth race for fillies and mares on the main track, is one of three Grade III races that comprise Arlington’s inaugural Ladies Day card that also includes the $150,000 Arlington-Washington Lassie for 2-year-old fillies and the $200,000 Pucker Up Stakes for 3-year-old fillies.

Highweighted at 115 pounds but a slight second choice in the morning line at odds of 2-1, Coolwind comes in off a half-length victory in a money allowance/optional claimer at 7 ½ furlongs over Polytrack. The Greg Geier-trained daughter of Forest Wildcat has won at the one-turn one-mile distance but is stretching out to two turns for the first time since finishing last of five in the Grade III Sixty Sails Handicap at Hawthorne Race Course. Coolwind finished second at this route last year in the Grade III Arlington Oaks. Her regular rider, Eusebio Razo Jr. gets the call again Saturday.

Round Heels is the 9-5 morning-line favorite for the Matron despite an uncharacteristically poor effort in the $48,000 Possibly Perfect Stakes over turf on June 23. The Chris Block-trained daughter of Dagger Drawn has done nearly all of her bidding on turf and is making just her second start over a synthetic surface, the first being a good second in the Grade II Bayakoa Handicap over Cushion Track at Hollywood Park. The 6-year-old mare has been working well in preparation for this start including a bullet 58-second five-furlong drill over Arlington’s Polytrack on Sept. 2. Eduardo Perez has been named to ride and will make up most of the 113-pound weight assignment.

Slated to face the top pair in the Matron (with jockey and weight assignment) are: Arbaway Farm and Carson Spring Farm’s Ms. Lydonia (James Graham, 113 pounds); Richard Glantz’s Solo Survivor (Julien Leparoux, 112); J. R. Lewis’s On Safari (Corey Nakatani, 112); and Stonestreet Stable LLC’s Eyes On Eddy (Robby Albarado, 114).

Arlington Park – the Chicago area’s premier Thoroughbred racetrack located in Arlington Heights, Ill. – will run a 94-day meet in 2007 from Friday, May 4 through Sunday, Sept. 16. Arlington Park, whose parent company is Churchill Downs Incorporated (Nasdaq: CHDN), also operates nine off-track, simulcast-wagering facilities: Trackside Arlington Park (Arlington Heights), Trackside Chicago, Trackside Quad City Downs (East Moline), Trackside Rockford, Trackside Waukegan, Fat Sam’s Bar & Grill featuring Trackside OTB in Lockport, Lucky’s featuring Trackside OTB in South Elgin, Nicolino’s featuring Trackside OTB in McHenry and The Inferno featuring Trackside OTB in South Beloit.
