More details released on racing hearings

CHICAGO, IL -- The Illinois Racing Board has scheduled hearings to address the state of horse racing in Illinois. The hearings will be held on July 18, 19 and 24, at the James R. Thompson Center in Chicago. Specific times and hearing rooms to be announced at a later date.

The hearings will address the difficulties and challenges confronting horse racing in Illinois. The discussion will focus on three subjects:

1. Illinois’ Racing History and Economic Impact on the Overall Economy

• History of Illinois horse racing.
• Areas of the State impacted by racing.
• Economic health of the businessmen and women participating in Illinois racing.
• Challenges facing Illinois racetrack operators.
• Declining revenue contributions to State and local governments.

2. National Market Pressures and Competitive Forces Confronting Illinois Racing

• Competition from advance deposit wagering operators, online casino gaming and virtual poker rooms.
• Competition from racing jurisdictions that supplement purses with alternative gaming revenue sources.

3. Solutions

• Examine alternative gaming options at racetracks.
• Reallocation of existing casino gaming revenues as a funding source for racing relief.
• Authorization of advance deposit wagering in Illinois.
• Modifications to the take-out structure and annual racing schedule.
