Wiggins Dominates Milwaukee Avenue

William Pacella, Joseph Rizza and Ronald Schwed’s Wiggins pressed the early pace, took full command at the head of the lane, and cruised to a four-length victory over the late closing Air Academy in Saturday’s $105,650 Milwaukee Avenue Handicap at Hawthorne. It was a length further back to Storm Coming in third.

Chris Emigh piloted the 6-year-old gelded son of Cartwright, who completed the 1 1/16 miles over a fast track in 1:44.81. The victory increased his career bankroll to $696,482.

As the 6-5 favorite, Wiggins returned $4.40, $3.00 and $2.60. Air Academy paid $3.60 and $2.60, and Storm Coming returned $6.80 to show.

Milwaukee Avenue Quotes:

Chris Emigh, winning rider, Wiggins: "We got lucky that the race came up without much speed so I got to relax him a little and that’s what I did. I figured that all I had to do was not get him tired and he’d win. I’m just glad that Dale gave me the mount back. I rode him twice and he won both."

Isreal Ocampo, rider of 3rd place finisher, Storm Coming: "There was too much speed and I got into a lot of traffic in the stretch."

Larry Sterling, rider of 2nd place finisher Air Academy: "I had a great trip. Only one problem, we ran second."
