I’ve Got a Dream to Take His Show on the Road

Edgar Winner to Join Chris Richard’s String at Oaklawn Park

Hawthorne’s Jim Edgar Illinois Futurity winner I’ve Got a Dream came out of Saturday’s stakes in good shape, and a trip to Oaklawn Park for a Jan. 28 allowance race is next on his agenda.

“We were very proud of the way he ran (on Saturday),” said trainer Chris Richard. “The race (on Jan. 28) is for non-winners of three over a mile. “It will be a very good test, but we think he earned the chance. There’s going to be some very good 3-year-olds at Oaklawn this spring. If it doesn’t work, we’ll just run him back with Illinois-breds.”

The Edgar marked the second career stakes win in the young career of Richard. The other came this past summer at Prairie Meadows when he captured the $50,000 Freshman Stakes with another 2-year-old in Biglie Smallworld.

Richard, who took out his trainer’s license last year after serving as an assistant to Tom Amoss, has seen his stable grow in size, and improve in quality, in 2006. He is an up and coming young trainer who has already shown a knack for winning with 2-year-olds.

“I brought along a lot of Tom’s (Amoss) babies, and learned that it’s never a good idea to pass judgment too early,” Richard explained. “Patience is key and you have to have an open mind. Young horses can change so quickly and you must be able to adjust on the fly.”

In the Edgar, I’ve Got a Dream defeated the highly regarded Caruso despite losing his left front shoe shortly after the start. He was assigned a Beyer speed figure of 62.

“He’s a unique horse in that he can sprint and route,” said Richard, who will have 25 horses stabled at Oaklawn. “I think he may be a little better routing, but only time will tell.”

The 2006 fall Thoroughbred meet at Hawthorne Race Course runs September 15 through January 1 with live racing five days per week – Wednesday through Sunday (except Nov. 23 and Dec. 24). The dark days are Monday and Tuesday (except Oct. 9, Dec. 26 and Jan.1). Post time is 1:10 p.m. daily.

Hawthorne’s races can be seen live on Horse Racing Television (HRTV). HRTV provides full, in-depth coverage of the current Hawthorne Race Course meeting, with complete post parades, and expert analysis from the network's hosts.

Hawthorne’s spring 2007 Thoroughbred meet will run February 23 thru May 3. The summer 2007 Standardbred meet will be held June 22 thru August 5. The fall 2007 Thoroughbred meet will run September 17 thru December 31.
