Razo to Give Oaklawn a Whirl

Ocampo and Zimmerman also reveal winter plans

Fresh off his victory aboard I’ve Got a Dream in Saturday’s Jim Edgar Futurity, jockey Eddie Razo Jr. has announced that he’s going to give the Oaklawn meet a try this winter.

Razo has been a Chicago mainstay for virtually every day of his 23-year career.

“I’ve been with him 12 years now, and this is the first time we’re going to try a meet outside of Chicago,” said Razo’s agent Lindy McDaniel. “At first we were just going to go to Tampa for a working vacation, but then we decided to get more serious and give Oaklawn a go. I called several trainers down there whom we have ridden for in the past, and got a good response.”

Razo, 40, will ride at Hawthorne through Saturday, December 23.

“He’s going to enjoy the holidays with his family,” McDaniel said. “We plan on getting to Oaklawn on January 5 so we’ll be there a couple of weeks before the season starts (Jan. 19).”

Despite missing five weeks of the meet due to a separated shoulder suffered in mid October, Razo sits ninth in the Hawthorne jockey standings with 23 wins from 165 mounts. He has 2,453 career victories.

At the conclusion of the meet (Jan. 1), Israel Ocampo, currently fourth in the Hawthorne standings with 38 wins from 303 mounts, is expected to join Razo in Arkansas and second leading rider Ramsey Zimmerman (53 for 399) has indicated that he will move his tack to Fair Grounds.

The 2006 fall Thoroughbred meet at Hawthorne Race Course runs September 15 through January 1 with live racing five days per week – Wednesday through Sunday (except Nov. 23 and Dec. 24). The dark days are Monday and Tuesday (except Oct. 9, Dec. 26 and Jan.1). Post time is 1:10 p.m. daily.

Hawthorne’s races can be seen live on Horse Racing Television (HRTV). HRTV provides full, in-depth coverage of the current Hawthorne Race Course meeting, with complete post parades, and expert analysis from the network's hosts.

Hawthorne’s spring 2007 Thoroughbred meet will run February 23 thru May 3. The summer 2007 Standardbred meet will be held June 22 thru August 5. The fall 2007 Thoroughbred meet will run September 17 thru December 31.
