Kirby, Tomillo On Even Terms in Trainer’s Race

With a pair of wins on Sunday (Island Boogie in race 2 and 16-1 shot War Facts in race 8), Frank Kirby pushed into a tie with Tom Tomillo atop the Hawthorne trainer standings. Kirby is 27 for 147 and Tomillo is 27 for 193. Arlington’s 2006 titlist Wayne Catalano is third with 20 wins from 84 starts. There are 21 days left in the Hawthorne fall meet.

Tomillo, who captured the crown this past spring with 28 wins (8 more than Catalano), has four Hawthorne titles to his credit (1988, fall 2001, spring 2002 and spring 2006). Kirby has topped the Hawthorne standings five previous times (1974, 1980, 1982, 1985 and 2004).

Over a three-year span (2004 to the present) Tomillo is Hawthorne’s leading conditioner with 159 wins from 1151 starts. He’s followed by Kirby (128 for 908), Mike Reavis (123 for 636), Catalano (112 for 369) and Roger Brueggemann (105 for 535).

On the Chicago circuit since 2004 (Hawthorne and Arlington combined), Catalano leads all trainers with 242 wins from 738 starts. He’s followed by Kirby (220 for 1,574), Tomillo (219 for 1,862), Reavis (168 for 975) and Chris Block (161).

The 2006 fall Thoroughbred meet at Hawthorne Race Course runs September 15 through January 1 with live racing five days per week – Wednesday through Sunday (except Nov. 23 and Dec. 24). The dark days are Monday and Tuesday (except Oct. 9 and Jan. 1). Post time is 1:10 p.m. daily.

Hawthorne’s spring 2007 Thoroughbred meet will run February 23 thru May 3. The summer 2007 Standardbred meet will be held June 22 thru August 5. The fall 2007 Thoroughbred meet will run September 17 thru December 31.
