Campbell, Fires Escape Serious Injury

Jockeys safe and sound following second race spill

Jockeys Jesse Campbell and Earlie Fires both escaped serious injury following an accident during the running of Hawthorne’s second race on Thursday.

While running on the lead, Icanpersevere broke down approaching the half-mile pole, tossing rider Campbell to the track. Do the Wave ran up into his distressed rival, Fires lost his balance, and also fell to the track.

Fires was rendered temporarily unconscious, and Campbell complained of minor right arm and shoulder pain. Both were taken to Loyola Hospital in Maywood for observation.

Icanpersevere had to be humanely destroyed. Do the Wave returned to his stable safely.

Campbell X-rayed clean and was released.

“He’s a little sore,” said his agent Penny Ffitch-Heyes. “He had planned on this being his last day of riding for the meet. He’s going to start working horses in New Orleans next week, and has a stakes mount at Calder (Summer Book) on the 11th (of November).”

Campbell won with 15 of his 131 mounts at the current Hawthorne meet.

According to Ffitch-Heyes, Fires underwent a precautionary CAT scan, was cleared, and released. He has nine wins from 68 starts at the meet. His status for Friday’s Hawthorne card is unknown.

The 2006 fall Thoroughbred meet at Hawthorne Race Course runs September 15 through January 1 with live racing five days per week – Wednesday through Sunday (except Nov. 23).
