Vacare to Skip Breeders’ Cup

Undefeated filly is not pre-entered in Filly and Mare Turf

After much deliberation, owner Robert L. Lothenbach decided against pre-entering his prized 3-year-old turf filly Vacare in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare turf to be run on the Thoroughbred World Championship program, Saturday, November 4 at Churchill Downs.

Vacare, who was last seen winning the Grade I Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup over the Keeneland green on October 14, is perfect from four starts. She also counts the Grade III Pucker Up Stakes at Arlington among her victories.

“There will several reasons we decided against it (the Breeders’ Cup),” said trainer Chris Block. “The competition jump off short (three weeks) rest, the additional distance (11 furlongs versus nine), and the fact that her schedule did not revolve around the Breeders’ Cup this year were the mitigating factors. Heck, in June she was an unraced maiden.”

Vacare is catalogued in the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall Mixed sale to be held in Lexington, Kentucky, the day after Breeders’ Cup (Sunday, Nov. 5). She is consigned by Chesapeake Farm of Drew Nardiello.

“She would have to be a prime prospect for a potential buyer,” Block said. “She’s fresh, isn’t overraced, and with several of the top females in the division likely to retire, she could quickly become one of the new stars. Mr. Lothenbach will set a reserve, and if it is not met, it will be a pleasure for us to campaign her next year.”

The 2006 fall Thoroughbred meet at Hawthorne Race Course runs September 15 through January 1 with live racing five days per week – Wednesday through Sunday (except Nov. 23). The dark days are Monday and Tuesday (except Oct. 9 and Jan.1). Post time on Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday is 1:10 p.m. Friday post time through November 17 is 3 p.m., at which time it will revert back to 1:10 p.m. for the remainder of the meet.

Hawthorne’s races can be seen live on Horse Racing Television (HRTV). HRTV provides full, in-depth coverage of the current Hawthorne Race Course meeting, with complete post parades, and expert analysis from the network's hosts.

Hawthorne’s spring 2007 Thoroughbred meet will run February 23 thru May 3. The summer 2007 Standardbred meet will be held June 22 thru August 5. The fall 2007 Thoroughbred meet will run September 17 thru December 31.
