Cushion Babies Win Comfortably at Hawthorne

Two horses out of the same mare score in back-to-back races

In a racing rarity, two horses out of the same mare both won at Hawthorne on Thursday. Illinois-breds Count Sheep and Tuffted, both of whom are out of the broodmare Cushion, scored victories in races three and four respectively. The 5-year-old Tuffted was sired by Magliore, and her 3-year-old baby half-sister Count Sheep was fathered by Count the Time.

In Thursday’s comeback race at Laurel Park, Grade II Illinois Derby winner Sweetnorthernsaint defeated just two rivals in a third-level allowance over seven furlongs at Laurel Park. He won by 4 ½ lengths at odds of 1-9 and received the short comment “bobbled start, 3-wide, easily.” It was his first appearance since finishing second behind likely Breeders’ Cup Classic favorite Bernardini in the Grade I Preakness at Pimlico in mid-May.

Saturday’s Hawthorne card doesn’t offer any stakes action, but full fields abound. A total of 89 horses are entered in the nine races (also eligible and main track only horses not included), and five of the nine events offer purses of at least $24,000.
