Chicago Flavor to Keenelands Saturday Races
Campbell, Marquez Join Hawthornes Leading Rider Emigh in Kentucky Stakes Action
Racing fans will be treated to an excellent live card on Saturday at Hawthorne. Full fields grace the program (91 horses in nine races, not including also eligibles and main track onlys), sophomore turf stars Brilliant and Go Between square off against six rivals in the $250,000 Grade III Hawthorne Derby, there are carryover pools in both the Place Pick Nine ($14,100) and Pick Six ($7,881), and the weatherman promises sunny skies and temperatures in the mid 50s.
While the main focus remains on the live product, local racing fans should also keep an eye on some of their Chicago favorites competing at Keeneland. Hawthornes leading rider Chris Emigh will partner a pair of horses for Christine Janks. The teams Grade III Modesty winner Chic Dancer will take on Grade I Beverly D. victress Gorella in the Grade II First Lady, and Big Rushlet will battle the Brian Williamson-trained Straight Line in a money allowance earlier on the card.
Saturday also marks the return of Chris Blocks undefeated sophomore female turfer Vacare, who has been installed at odds of 20-1 in the morning-line in the Grade I Queen Elizabeth II Invitational. Carlos Marquez Jr. stays aboard.
Jesse Campbell pilots defending Illinois Horse of the Year Original Spin in the Grade III Thoroughbred Club of America, a race that trainer Tony Mitchell won a couple of years ago with the Prairie Stater Summer Mis. Fellow Illinois-bred Bluesbdancing will also go postward in that event, and both gals may be using the race as a springboard to the $100,000 Powerless Stakes to be run at Hawthorne as part of the Phil Georgeff Illinois Festival of Racing card on Saturday, November 11.
The 2006 fall Thoroughbred meet at Hawthorne Race Course runs September 15 through January 1 with live racing five days per week Wednesday through Sunday (except Nov. 23). The dark days are Monday and Tuesday (except Oct. 9 and Jan.1). Post time on Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday is 1:10 p.m. Friday post time through November 17 is 3 p.m., at which time it will revert back to 1:10 p.m. for the remainder of the meet.
Hawthornes races can be seen live on Horse Racing Television (HRTV). HRTV provides full, in-depth coverage of the current Hawthorne Race Course meeting, with complete post parades, and expert analysis from the network's hosts.
Hawthornes spring 2007 Thoroughbred meet will run February 23 thru May 3. The summer 2007 Standardbred meet will be held June 22 thru August 5. The fall 2007 Thoroughbred meet will run September 17 thru December 31.
