Mott Trio Headlines List of Hawthorne Derby Nominations

Graded stakes winners Go Between and Union Avenue join Desert Wheat on the list for Hall of Fame trainer

Trainer Bill Mott survived a few anxious moments to win the 2005 edition of the $250,000 Grade III Hawthorne Derby with Brant Laue’s Gun Salute, and this year he has three bullets to fire for a potential repeat bid on Saturday, October 14.

Sent off as the overwhelming 1-5 favorite off his victory in the Grade I Secretariat Stakes at Arlington, Gun Salute battled tooth and nail to edge Cosmic Kris, and survived an inquiry before the official light went on.

Nominations for the 42nd running of the Hawthorne Derby were released by racing secretary Gary Duch on Thursday, and Mott trains three of the 27 3-year-old turfers on the list: Peter Vegso’s Go Between, the winner of the Grade II Virginia Derby at Colonial Downs in July; Arlington Park’s 23-1 American Derby upsetter Union Avenue, owned by WinStar Farms Inc.; and the graded stakes veteran Desert Wheat, campaigned by Wachtel Stables and Brous Stables.

Other group/graded stakes winners whose names appear on the Hawthorne Derby nominations file include (with trainer): David Soifer’s Amigoni (Motion), winner of the Group III Dubai Duty Free Anglesey Stakes at the Curragh in Ireland on July 17; Mill House’s Brilliant (Howard), the victor in both the Grade II Jefferson Cup at Churchill on June 17 and the Grade III Kent Breeders’ Cup at Delaware on September 9; Oxbow Racing LLC’s Kingship (Werner), the 10-1 upsetter in the Grade II American Derby at Arlington on July 1; Klaravich Stable’s Outperformance (Violette), who took down the Grade III Hill Prince Stakes at Belmont on June 9; and Flatbird Stable’s Rock Lobster (Dickinson), winner of the Grade III Saranac at Saratoga on September 3.
