Impressive Youngsters Trot to Grand Circuit Scores
Grand Circuit week continued at Hawthorne on Thursday night as 3-year-old trotting colts were featured in the $44,500 World Series Stake, as were 2-year-old filly trotters in a pair of divisions of the World Series Stake, each worth $32,875.
In Hawthorne’s opener, Roman Holiday used an eye-opening :27.2 final quarter to nail Amazon Clipper by a ˝ length in the World Series Stake for sophomore trotting colts. Driven by Dave Magee, the son of Dream Vacation sat comfortably in third for 7/8th of a mile as Mike Oosting had Emery Ho in the pilot’s seat through fractions of :28.3, :58.2 and 1:28.1.
As the trotters turned for paydirt, Todd Warren popped Amazon Clipper out of the two-hole and assumed command, but right behind him was Roman Holiday and his late surge was enough to secure the verdict. The1:56.2 victory was Roman Holiday’s first of the year, after the Erv Miller trainee registered four triumphs as a 2 year-old.
Real Hope used a perfect two-hole trip to emerge victorious in the first division of the World Series for 2 year-old filly trotters. D.R.Ackerman came away second after letting Too Busy To Cook assume command early.
Tim Tetrick rolled 2-5 favorite Fox Valley Deja to the top approaching the 1:00.4 half and remained in control until deep stretch. That’s when Ackerman resolutely guided Real Hope past the favorite to record the 2:00.3 victory. It was Ackerman’s second World Series triumph after winning the 2-year-old colt trot on Wednesday night.
Division two went to Fox Valley Smoothy, as the full sister to Million Dollar Bye began her career in sparkling fashion. Dave Magee was at the controls behind the Erv Miller trainee who closed from fifth at the top of the lane to secure the victory by a ˝ length over Enjoy The Music in 2:04.3.
Rhonda T, the 2-1 post time favorite, made a break at the start and spotted the field some 25 lengths. However, the daughter of Credit Winner made an amazing comeback and circled the field as driver D.R.Ackerman grabbed the lead midway down the stretch. However, the taxing trip took its toll and Rhonda T faded to fourth in a gallant effort.
