Muscles Marinara Fit and Ready To Defend Dygert Title

With the eliminations for the Erwin F Dygert Memorial Trot just ten days away, last year’s Dygert champ, Muscles Marinara, returned to Hawthorne for the first time since that memorable performance. The altered son of Muscles Yankee went postward in the featured $15,500 Open Trot on Tueday night at Hawthorne and the betting public certainly remembered the Paul Stafford trainee as he was installed as the even money favorite starting from post position number five.

Mike Oosting went right to the top with Muscles Marinara after receiving light pressure from the rail horse Bright Idea. After stopping the quarter timer in :28.2, Oosting was allowed to let the Dygert champ trot to a pedestrian :31.3 second quarter while the remainder of the field remained content to sit in behind him.

Elk Creek finally was the first induced to make a move and actually moved up to second at the head of the lane. However, with the easy panels, Muscles Marinara coasted home in :26.3 and the verdict was really never in doubt. Bright Idea (Todd Warren) was rewarded for sitting in behind the winner the entire mile and finished second, 1 ¾ lengths behind the winner, while Dink Adoo raced impressively, coming from last to grab third money in the 1:54.3 mile.

Muscles Marinara's next appearance will be on Friday, June 9, in the $25,000 Dygert Eliminations. The $100,000 est. Dygert Final will be featured on Hawthorne’s closing night, Saturday, June 17.

Also featured on Hawthorne’s Tuesday card was a pair of divisions of leg one of the Berwyn Pacing Series. In the first $5,000 division, Rising Debt won her 7th consecutive race, for driver/trainer Todd Warren, defeating Pecos River Queen by a length and a quarter in a lifetime best 1:54.4. In division two, Tim Tetrick guided Odds On Sarah to a 1:54 victory over Silhouette. Leg two of the Berwyn Pacing Series will go postward next Tuesday.

Hawthorne’s spring 2006 Standardbred meet runs May 6 through June 17 with live racing six days per week: Tuesday through Sunday. Post time is 7:20 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, and opening day, Saturday May 6 (special early post).
