Night of Champions Appetizer on Tap Saturday

Next Saturday, June 3, features Hawthorne’s Night of Champions, but this Saturday’s card isn’t too shabby either.

Illinois-breds will take one step closer to stepping into the Night of Champions spotlight on Saturday night, competing in Leg Two of both The Hothead and the Jimmy Pilot.

In Leg Two of The Hothead (race two), a field of ten extremely talented 3-year-old colts and geldings will gather behind the gate. Hot N Sporty, who was a an absolute monster at Hawthorne last summer, served notice that he’s ready for bigger and better things as a sophomore last week. Away from the race wars for more than seven months, he returned off a pair of qualifiers to score a gate-to-wire victory from the ten-hole in Leg One of the Hot Head. He’ll be opposed by fellow Illinois stars Pujols, Fox Valley Cruiser, My Boy David, Cubs Series winner Fox Valley Tribal and a host of others on Saturday night.

In Leg Two of The Jimmy Pilot (race four), last week’s game winner Live Out Loud eyes a repeat score. Seven of the eight rivals he defeated last week return for a second crack, including runner-up Fox Valley Gallant and third place finisher Black Bingo. Constant Change and Team Hutch both endured brutal trips last week, and either is capable of turning the tables tonight.

In Saturday night’s Free For All (race seven), Hawthorne track record holder Town Champion makes his seasonal debut. He posted an incredible 1:48 2/5 mile here last summer, and was last seen finishing second behind the classy Escape the Wind in the American National Final at Balmoral on November 5. He Wants It All, the winner of last year’s Carey Memorial at Hawthorne, heads postward for the first time in a month, and Westward Vision, who posted a new life mark of 1:50 1/5 in winning last week’s Free For All, hopes for the encore.

Hawthorne’s spring 2006 Standardbred meet runs May 6 through June 17 with live racing six days per week: Tuesday through Sunday. Post time is 7:20 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, and opening day, Saturday May 6 (special early post).

Hawthorne’s fall 2006 Thoroughbred meet runs September 15 through December 31 with live racing five days per week: Wednesday through Sunday. Post time is 1:10 p.m.

Hawthorne’s spring 2006 Thoroughbred meet ran February 24 through May 2.
