Quik Pulse Mindale and Timesareachanging Battle It Out In Hawthorne Qualifier

While Hawthorne presented an excellent mid-week card on Wednesday night, highlighted by two $12,000 divisions of leg two of the Silhouette Star Stake for 3 year-old Illinois Bred trotting fillies, perhaps the most intriguing race of the night was the third qualifying race held before the start of the regular race card.

In that race, Quik Pulse Mindale was making his first appearance since racing in a qualifying race at Balmoral last October 19th. After a remarkable 3 year-old campaign in 2004 where the son of Jennas Beach Boy won 12 of 19 starts, while banking over $700,000 and taking a mark of 1:48, he started only two times in 2005 and it was obvious he was dealing with some physical problems.

Also competing in the same qualifier was Timesareachanging, who also had an outstanding season as a 3 year-old in 2004. The son of Cam’s Card Shark won $1,175,574 that year, winning 10 of 22 starts, while taking a mark of 1:48.3 including a victory in the Little Brown Jug. Timesarachanging was making his first appearance since racing in November of 2005 at The Meadowlands.

Thus, these two outstanding 5 year-olds were seeking to recoup some of that excellent past form and perhaps get ready for a fruitful 2006 season beginning with the qualifying race at Hawthorne. Quik Pulse Mindale went right to the lead and Timesareachanging dropped into the two-hole. At the top of the lane, these two former champions pulled away from the rest of the field and Quik Pulse Mindale emerged a nose better then Timesareachanging in the 1:54.1 mile.

Quik Pulse Mindale is now under the tutelage of Erv Miller and we can probably expect to see him in action in another qualifier before he makes his first pari-mutuel start of 2006.

Hawthorne’s spring 2006 Standardbred meet runs May 6 through June 17 with live racing six days per week: Tuesday through Sunday. Post time is 7:20 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, and opening day, Saturday May 6 (special early post).

Hawthorne’s spring 2006 Thoroughbred meet ran February 24 through May 2.
