Victor’s Pursuit Makes Amends
Storms Home in Eddie Oakley at Overlay Odds
Robert Rietveld and Paul Gibson’s Victor’s Pursuit, who finished fifth as the 3-5 favorite in the Muscles Marinara Final last week, made amends in so many ways on Sunday night at Hawthorne Race Course, capturing Leg One of the $10,000 Eddie Oakley in come from behind fashion.
Installed as Tony Somone’s 3-1 morning line favorite, the Roger Welch-trained 4-year-old daughter of Valley Victory was sent off at overlay odds of 5-1, and those who stuck with her following her loss last week, were rewarded handsomely.
The Vicster left from the five-hole, but was used hard to finally make the top before the opening quarter was reached in a swift :28 1/5. He slowed it down through a half in :59, and three-quarters in 1:29 3/5, while Battleshoe Victor, sent off as the 4-5 chalk from the rail, sat in the garden spot the entire trip.
In the stretch, The Vicster trotted on gamely as Battleshoe Victor desperately hunted racing room. Victor’s Pursuit, partnered by Ryan Anderson, came up third over behind the live cover provided by Southern Victoria K and Arcola, scorched the final quarter in :26 1/5, and nailed The Vicster late to win by a half length in a final time of 1:57. Battleshoe Victor, who found room on the inside late, was unable to build up the necessary momentum and finished third, just a length behind the winner.
Victor’s Pursuit, a winner for the 16th time in 29 lifetime starts, returned $13.00, $6.00 and $3.20. The Vicster paid $3.80 and $2.40. Battleshoe Victor returned $2.60 to show.
Battleshoe Victor, who did not pay the initial $500 to nominate to the Eddie Oakley, was supplemented to the three-race Series for $5,500 this past week.
Leg Two of the Eddie Oakley will be raced next Sunday, May 28, and the purse will jump to $15,000. The top ten money earners at the conclusion of both Legs will be invited to participate in the $50,000 (est.) Final on Night of Champions to be held Saturday, June 3.
