Cubs Win! Cubs Win!

The North Side Chicago baseball team hasn’t been doing much of it lately, but somebody HAS TO WIN Saturday’s Cubs Pace Final at Hawthorne Race Course.

The top five finishers from last Saturday night’s eliminations return for the $28,500 Final (race 10), and it promises to be a wide open betting race. Odd’s On B P, who set a new life mark of 1:52 for Odds on Racing and trainer Robin Schadt in his elimination score, has been installed as Tony Simone’s lukewarm 3-1 morning line favorite. The 4-year-old gelded son of Life Sign leaves from post position nine in rein to Ryan Anderson.

Snuff Box, who upset 7-5 shot Cheyenne Bodie in 1:52 3/5 in his elimination score at odds of 8-1 last week, may be a price again in the Final, based on his 8-1 morning line offering. He utilized a rail skimming trip to post the upset last week, and leaves from post position two on Saturday night for trainer Leroy Fox and driver Mike Oosting.

Cornelius Eyes Repeat

Also on Saturday’s card, Yukon Cornelius, who dominated last week’s Free For All by five lengths in a new life best time of 1:50 1/5 for driver trainer Todd Warren, headlines a field of seven for the handicap event (race 9).

Despite the romping win, the 7-year-old gelded son of Cam Terrific has been installed as the 7-2 second choice in Simone’s morning line, with a slight 3-1 nod going to the Paul Stafford-trained Gene Carter, who finished second behind Yukon Cornelius after enduring a difficult, wide trip. Mike Oosting gets the return call.

Hawthorne’s spring 2006 Standardbred meet runs May 6 through June 17 with live racing six days per week: Tuesday through Sunday. Post time is 7:20 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, and opening day, Saturday May 6 (special early post).

Hawthorne’s fall 2006 Thoroughbred meet runs September 15 through December 31 with live racing five days per week: Wednesday through Sunday. Post time is 1:10 p.m.

Hawthorne’s spring 2006 Thoroughbred meet ran February 24 through May 2.
