Yukon Cornelius romps in Hawthorne’s free for all opener

After three consecutive second place finishes in the Free For All ranks in Chicago since invading from Windsor Raceway, Yukon Cornelius put away all doubts about a case of seconditis with a stunning 5 length victory in the featured $21,500 Free For All Pace on opening night at Hawthorne.

The 7 year-old son of Cam Terrific was sent right to the top from post 5 by driver-trainer Todd Warren and once there they made every call a winning one as they stopped the Hawthorne timer in 1:50.1 on a cool May evening. In the well-rated mile, with panels of :27.4, :55.1, 1:23.3 and 1:50.1, Yukon Cornelius put away the only serious challenge of King Sands N at the head of lane and drew off to the convincing victory. The favored Yukon Cornelius paid $5.60 to win while Gene Carter finished second and Odds On Big Tom ended up third.

In the undercard, Hawthorne presented a pair of $10,000 eliminations for both the White Sox Pace and the Cubs Pace. Street Dancer ($3.20) opened the meet with a 1:53 victory in the first elimination of the White Sox as Dale Hiteman stirred the daughter of Richess Hanover to the ¾ length victory over Greek Wine. In the second division of the White Sox, favored Sherri On Ice (Dave Magee) was a one-length winner over Gro in a 1:53.1 mile. The top five finishers in each elimination will return next Friday for the $25,000 est. White Sox Pace Final.

Snuff Box ($18.40) pulled off the mild upset in the first elimination of the Cubs Pace. Mike Oosting waited patiently with the Incredible Finale gelding and slid inside the post time favorite Cheyenne Bodie to score the ½ length victory in 1:52.3. Odds On B P was an impressive winner in the second elim for driver Ryan Anderson. The Robin Schadt trainee came first-over to defeat favored Fox Valley Tribal by 1 ¼ lengths in 1:52.1. The final of the $25,000 est. Cubs Pace will feature the top five finishers from each elimination race on next Saturday’s card.
