Tasty Sunday Fare, Muscles Marinara Eliminations on Tap

Two nights into the Hawthorne Harness racing season and the Eliminations are already in full swing.

Sunday's second and fourth races, The Muscles Marinara Trot Eliminations, are named in honor of last year's Erwin F. Dygert Memorial Trot winner who surprised virtually everybody, including many of his own connections, with a wire-to-wire victory and a $63.20 win payoff.

"I'm really surprised," said trainer Jessica Stevens in an interview after the race. "I was hoping that he would do well but I never really expected this. I've only had him a couple of weeks.

But, driver Tony Morgan wasn't surprised. "I was a little disappointed after the last race after the way he faded late," said Stevens, "but Tony (driver Morgan) told me he got hit in the head with a whip and that's why he slowed down. He liked this horse."

"It was kind of funny. I told Tony that I couldn't go back home unless we finished at least third and he just looked at me and said 'How about a win?' I guess he wasn't joking."

Lifes A Holiday, another former Dygert winner, tries to regain some form for Homer Hochstetler. He's winless so far this year but has always enjoyed racing here. Might be ready for a wake-up call.

The Muscles Marinara Trot Eliminations carries a purse of $10,000 with the Final, to be contested next Sunday, May 14, offering a purse of $25,000.

In the co-featured first race, an Open for fillies and mares with a purse of $15,500, Sightings will try to extend her win streak to three while Parklane Powerful, another who has been a considerable force at Hawthorne, will try to avenge her loss to that red-hot rival.

Hawthorne’s spring 2006 Standardbred meet runs May 6 through June 17 with live racing six days per week: Tuesday through Sunday. Post time is 7:20 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, and opening day, Saturday May 6 (special early post).

Hawthorne’s fall 2006 Thoroughbred meet runs September 15 through December 31 with live racing five days per week: Wednesday through Sunday. Post time is 1:10 p.m.

Hawthorne’s spring 2006 Thoroughbred meet ran February 24 through May 2.
