Illinois Derby Tidbits

Hawthorne added a third Pick Four opportunity for today’s Illinois Derby Day card, and the second wager sequence includes all three stakes races. The Trifecta of Pick Fours kicks off in races two, five and seven. Here’s a schedule of events you should know about.

Illinois Derby facts:

My Golden Song’s trainer Todd Pletcher has won the Illinois Derby twice, with Distilled in 2001 and Pollards Vision in 2004. He finished second last year with Monarch Lane.

Frank Calabrese, the owner of Lewis Michael, has been the leading horse owner in Chicago for many years. The horse is named one of his three sons.

Devilofarush’s trainer Michael Maker won the 2004 Hawthorne Gold Cup with 27-1 shot Freefourinternet.

Bobby Frankel, the trainer of Rackateer, won the 1984 Illinois Derby with Delta Trace.

B. Wayne Hughes, the owner of Mister Triester, supplemented 2005 Illinois Derby winner Greeley’s Galaxy for $10,000.

Kent Desormeaux, who pilots Sweetnorthernsaint this year, was aboard last year’s victor Greeley’s Galaxy. The jockey also won the 1997 Illinois Derby with Wild Rush.

Devilofarush was sired by Wild Rush, who owns the all-time stakes record for the race with this 1:47.51 clocking at Sportsman’s Park.

Racketeer was sired by by 1998 Hawthorne Gold Cup winner Awesome Again.

The shortest priced Illinois Derby winner was Proper Reality, who scored at odds of 1-5 in 1988.

The highest priced Illinois Derby winner was Antrim Road, who scored at odds of 26-1 in 1993.

Hawthorne’s spring 2006 Thoroughbred meet runs February 24 through May 4 with live racing five days per week: Friday through Tuesday. Post time is 1:10 p.m. Saturday through Tuesday and 3 p.m. on Friday. Hawthorne is dark Wednesdays and Thursdays and Easter Sunday April 16, but full card simulcasting from racetracks across the country is offered every day.

The Grade II $500,000 Illinois Derby, a prestigious prep for the world famous Kentucky Derby, will be run at Hawthorne on Saturday, April 8.
