Lode Code, Meafara Stakes Add Spice to Illinois Derby Day at Hawthorne

The marquee event on Hawthorne’s spring Thoroughbred calendar is the Grade II $500,000 Illinois Derby for Triple Crown hopefuls, and adding even more interest to what promises to be a sensational April 8th card are a pair of $100,000 stakes for sophomore sprinters: the Lost Code for the boys, and the Meafara for the girls. Nominations for both six furlong events closed Tuesday, March 28 (pending late mail).

The Lost Code attracted 16 three-year-old colts and geldings. Some of the top names include (with trainer): Celluloid Hero (Robertson), winner of three of five starts including the Dixieland Stakes at Oaklawn Park; City Dweller (Clement), first or second in each of his last four starts while competing on the East Coast, Don’t Tell Mommy (Asmussen), winner of the Pioneer Stakes at Louisiana Downs as a two-year-old; High Adventure (Werner), winner of consecutive allowance races at Oaklawn; Rochester Cat (Hansen), an impressive 13-length winner of a restricted Illinois maiden special weight event last out at Hawthorne; and Urban Guy (Ritchey), an easy winner of the Mountain Valley Stakes at Oaklawn earlier this winter.

The Meafara lists 19 eligible 3-year-olds at closing, including (with trainer): Coolwind (Geier), third in a pair of Grade III’s as a two-year-old – the Arlington Washington Lassie and Pocahontas at Churchill Downs; India (Pletcher), second in the Grade II Forward Gal last out at Gulfstream Park; My Chickadee (Williamson), a highly regarded local who won impressively at first asking earlier in March; Ready to Please (Pletcher), winner of consecutive races at Gulfstream; Rich Fantasy, an Illinois-bred winner of the restricted Showtime Deb Stakes last fall at Hawthorne; Somethingaboutbetty (Pletcher), winner of the restricted Maryland Juvenile for fillies last fall at Laurel Park; Victorina (Gilcrest), winner of a minor stakes at Golden Gate Fields last out; and Yachats (Pletcher), third last out in the Grade III Old Hat at Gulfstream.
