Reigning Illinois Horse of the Year Returns Sunday

Original Spin, the reigning Illinois Horse of the Year, is entered to make her sophomore debut in Sunday’s Grade II Forward Gal Stakes at Gulfstream Park.

Trained for the Russell L. Reineman Stables by Tony Mitchell, the 3-year-old daughter of Distorted Humor was last seen finishing third behind eventual Eclipse Award winner Folklore in the Grade I Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Filles (October 29 at Belmont).

Prior to her Championship Day appearance, she had won the first two races of her career at Arlington Park: a maiden special weight on August 13, and the Grade III Arlington Washington Lassie on September 18.

Original Spin wintered in Aiken, South Carolina, before making her way to Florida in mid February. At Gulfstream on February 27, she worked a sizzling :59 3/5 from the gate over a fast track with Sunday’s rider Rene Douglas aboard.

“It was a little quicker than I wanted, but she came out of it well,” Mitchell said of the work. “She didn’t get any taller (over the winter), but her body rounded out nicely. She has the look of a sprinter, but she acts like she can adapt to two turn racing.”

Mitchell hopes to use the seven furlong Forward Gal as a stepping stone to the Grade I Ashland at Keeneland and eventually the Grade I Kentucky Oaks at Churchill. Sunday’s race, which attracted no fewer than six stakes winners amongst the 11, will offer a stiff test.

“Yeah, it’s tough, but if you think you have a quality individual, you can’t dodge a little competition,” Mitchell said. “Original Spin did a lot of nice things last year, but the plan was to get to this point and to give her every opportunity to have a big 3-year-old season. Now we’re here.”

Fans can watch and wager on the Forward Gal from Gulfstream at Hawthorne, or at any of Illinois off-track or inter-track locations. Post time for the race is scheduled for 4:16 p.m.(CST) on Sunday.
