LIFE GUARD ON DUTY STUNS RIVALS IN $272,000 AMERICAN NATIONAL STAKE FINAL
When all was said and done it was 21-1 outsider Life Guard On Duty who emerged victorious in a stakes record 1:48.4.
Despite a second place finish in last week's action, the Todd La Fountaine trained sophomore was overlooked by the betting public. That did not deter driver Sam Widger who confidently moved the son of Jenna's Beach Boy first over at the half-mile mark.
"It really wasn't the trip I wanted," said an amazed Widger. "When my cover cleared so quickly I was stuck out there a long way."
Despite the toughness of the trip Life Guard On Duty continued to grind away at the pace setting My Boy David who made a huge sweeping move to the front just before the half-mile mark.
Engaged in a thrilling three-horse stretch duel with My Boy David and the 3-5 favorite, Jereme's Jet, Life Guard On Duty wore down the leader in the closing strides to win by a length. My Boy David held on gamely to finish second while Jereme's Jet was forced to settle for the third place check.
After going winless in 11 starts as a two-year-old Lifeguard On Duty has really come into his own in 2006. In six starts this season this colt has racked up four wins and two seconds in six starts with earnings of more than $141,000.
Lifeguard On Duty returned a hefty mutuel of $45.40, $14.60 & $6.00 while helping to key a $1,071.60 trifecta.
