MOON DOLLY WINS CLAIRE MARINE STAKES
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (Sept. 3, 2006) – Marc Dodson’s Moon Dolly overtook Cheyenne Spirit in the final strides to win the $41,625 Claire Marine Stakes by a head on Sunday at Arlington Park. Eusebio Razo Jr. was aboard the Dave Duggan-trained daughter of Kris S. who covered the mile and a half over firm ground in 2:32.73.
“Dave told me to take her back as soon as she broke,” said Razo, who completed a hat trick on the day with the victory. “I got into her with a half-mile left in the race and everything worked out fine. She was just loping along and when a hole opened up, she went right through it.”
Duggan, who only recently took over the training of the 5-year-old mare, made an adjustment into the type of blinkers used on the distaffer which he felt made the difference in getting the job done here.
The Claire Marine was the first win of the year for Moon Dolly, who bettered her overall record to four victories from 29 starts. She earned $24,975 to boost her bankroll into six figures at $123,432. She paid $10.20, $4.80 and $2.40.
Cheyenne Spirit took the lead in the stretch but could not hold off the eventual winner. She returned $6 and $4.20.
It was 2 ˝ lengths back to third-place finisher Grand Illusion, who paid $3.80.
Samantha B., Casuarina and Ms. Lydonia completed the order of finish in the six-horse field.
