SUNSET KISSES WINS MARIAH’S STORM STAKES
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (August 13, 2006) – Letto Thoroughbreds Inc.’s Sunset Kisses led from start to finish en route to a 1 ˝-length score in the $41,375 Mariah’s Storm Stakes Sunday at Arlington Park. Larry Sterling Jr. rode the Christine Janks-trained daughter of Sky Classic who covered the nine furlongs over a fast track in 1:51.60.
“Yesterday was a pretty dismal day but ‘Sunset’ pulled (the weekend) out for us today,” said Janks, who had to scratch Chic Dancer from Saturday’s Grade I Beverly D. Stakes because of a cough. “Larry has ridden her three times and she’s won all three. They really like each other. I saw the slow pace and I knew she would be tough. She loves to run like that.”
Sunset Kisses crawled through early fractions of 25.28 seconds for the quarter, 49.59 seconds for the half-mile, a three-quarter mile split of 1:13.78 and a mile clocking of 1:38.44 leaving plenty left in the tank to hold off any challenges late.
The win was the third in six starts this year and the $24,825 elevated her earnings to $260,900 while improving her overall record to 10 wins from 32 starts. Sent off at odds of more than 5-1, she paid $13.40, $4.80 and $3.
Capistrano was second and paid $5 and $2.60. It was another four lengths back to third-place finisher Platinum Ballet, who paid $2.20. Modjadji and Sara’s Tune completed the order of finish.
