Arlington Park Stakes Advance: Arlington Breeders' Cup Oaks (G3)

Contact: David Zenner

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (August 17, 2006) – Jim Tafel LLC’s Coolwind, winner of two straight races at Arlington Park, has been installed as the 2-1 morning line favorite in Saturday’s $150,000 Arlington Breeders’ Cup Oaks at the suburban Chicago racecourse. The Grade III mile and an eighth race for 3-year-old fillies includes $50,000 in purse enhancements for horses eligible to the Breeders’ Cup program.

A daughter of Forest Wildcat, Coolwind captured the $45,250 Sweetest Chant Stakes in her last start going a one-turn mile. Previously, the Greg Geier-trained filly won a second-level allowance race at the same distance. Eusebio Razo Jr. has the mount aboard Coolwind, whose record stands at three for nine overall.

Her main competition will likely come from Clinton C. & Susan A. Atkins’ Baghdaria. The daughter of Royal Academy has been facing tougher company in recent efforts. In her last trip to the post, the bay filly finished eighth in the Grade I Coaching Club American Oaks at Belmont Park. Prior to that, the Tom Amoss trainee captured the Grade III Iowa Oaks at Prairie Meadows after running third in the Grade II Black Eyed Susan Stakes at Pimlico in May. Arlington Park’s leading jockey Chris Emigh, who was aboard the filly when she broke her maiden last fall at Hawthorne Race Course, will ride Baghdaria Saturday.

Also expected to garner support at the windows is Millennium Farms’ Rolling Sea. The Sefapiano filly was second to Coolwind in the Sweetest Chant last time out. Earlier this year the Scott Blasi pupil beat state-bred rivals in the $87,700 Purple Violet Stakes on the Prairie State Festival card June 24. James Graham picks up the mount Saturday.

Completing the field for the Arlington Breeders’ Cup Oaks (with riders) are: Hugh G. King III’s My Chickadee (Rene Douglas); Elisabeth H. Alexander’s Cryptoquip (Robby Albarado); Troy Hames III’s Meadow Skippin (Jerry LaSala); and 100% Racing Stable LLC’s American Diva (Francisco Torres).

Arlington Park – the Chicago area’s premier Thoroughbred racetrack located in Arlington Heights, Ill. – will run a 95-day meet in 2006 from Friday, May 5 through Tuesday, Sept. 12. Arlington Park, whose parent company is Churchill Downs Incorporated (Nasdaq: CHDN), also operates eight off-track, simulcast-wagering facilities: Trackside Arlington Park (Arlington Heights), Trackside Quad City Downs (East Moline), Trackside Chicago, Trackside McHenry, Trackside Rockford, Trackside South Beloit, Trackside Waukegan and Lucky’s featuring Trackside OTB in South Elgin.
