Smoke Smoke Smoke Scores in Lost Code
STICKNEY, IL -- Following the impressive effort by Greeley’s Galaxy in the Illinois Derby, a three-year-old sprinter came up with a big race in the Lost Code Breeders’ Cup as Smoke Smoke Smoke rolled home to victory in the $143,650 event.
Setting the early fractions in the Lost Code was even money favorite Around the Cape as he carved out the early fractions of :22.35 and :45.60 for the opening half mile. Sitting in perfect position just off the pace was jockey Seth Martinez and Smoke Smoke Smoke as they were only a length off the pace. Taking the lead at the top of the stretch, Smoke Smoke Smoke had to fend off the late rally by Santana Strings but he held on for a ¾ length victory, stopping the clock in a quick 1:09.45 for the three-quarters. Santana Strings ran second while Around the Cape held on to run third.
Posting his fourth career victory from eight starts, Smoke Smoke Smoke earned $86,640 for the win for owners Jer Mar Stables LLC and trainer Hugh Robertson.
Smoke Smoke Smoke returned $14.20, $5.60 and $2.60. Santana Strings came back $4.20 and $2.40 while Around the Cape came back $2.10 to show.
Trainer Hugh Robertson had to give credit where it’s due with Smoke Smoke Smoke, “He’s a game horse. He’s really Mac’s (Hugh’s son Mac Robertson) so he has to get the credit. I run him under my name when he comes to Chicago, the rest of the time he races for Mac. He was able to sit comfortably early and after he grabbed the lead, he was able to relax a bit. He had enough left to hold off Santana Strings. I’m very happy with the effort. He’ll be heading north to race in a Minnesota stakes next but I’m sure he’ll be back at Arlington this summer.”
Jockey Seth Martinez was impressed as well with the race, “He broke very nicely and went nicely early on. When I asked him in the turn, he ranged up on the leader rather easily and was game to hold on in the lane. He’s only getting better every time out.”
Trying hard while running second in the Lost Code, jockey Larry Sterling Jr. and Santana Strings just ran out of time, “He was standing cleanly in the gate but when the door opened he hopped a bit and kind of lunged. I think that might have cost us the race. We started out further back than we wanted to be. We were making up ground on the winner late. We simply ran out of real estate.”
Live racing for the spring meet takes place from February 25 to May 10. Racing is conducted every Friday through Tuesday with first post at 1:10 PM.
