Hawthorne Leading Apprentice Rider Morris Injured
STICKNEY, IL -- Current leading apprentice rider for the fall meet, Liz Morris, was injured before Sunday’s sixth race when her mount, Sub Futz Jr., broke away from its pony leaving the Hawthorne paddock, running off with Morris down the stretch. Morris had yet to get her feet in the irons and was dropped from her mount in the middle of the stretch as Sub Futz Jr. picked up speed.
Morris was assessed on the track before being taken to Loyola Medical Center where it was determined that she had a broken collarbone which will keep her out of action for the remainder of the meet. Morris, 25, is currently 11th overall in the current Hawthorne standings with 20 wins and leads all apprentice riders for the meet.
Hawthorne races from September 24 through January 2. Racing is slated for four days a week, Wednesday, off Thursday, then Friday through Sunday. First post daily is 1:10 pm. Hawthorne can be contacted at 708-780-3700 or on the web at www.hawthorneracecourse.com.
