Perfect Drift, Funny Cide Among Hawthorne Gold Cup Nominees
STICKNEY, IL -- 2003 Hawthorne Gold Cup winner Perfect Drift and 2003 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Winner Funny Cide are among the 21 nominations for the 2004 edition of the Grade 2, $750,000 Hawthorne Gold Cup.
To be run on Saturday, October 2, the Grade 2, $750,000 Gold Cup Handicap is for three-year-olds and up and will be contested at one mile and one quarter on the main track.
Last year, Stonecrest Farmís Perfect Drift sat close to the early lead and drew off to victory in the Gold Cup. He followed up that performance with a troubled trip while finishing sixth in the Breedersí Cup Classic. In 2004, he is winless from six starts for trainer Murray Johnson but he has found the board in five of the six races, beaten only a nose in the Whitney (G1) and a length in the Pacific Classic (G1). Despite being winless on the year, he has earned $513,795 from his six starts.
Also on the list of nominees for the Gold Cup is Sackatoga Stableís Funny Cide. The three-year-old hero of 2003 grabbed the first two legs of the Triple Crown, winning the Kentucky Derby and Preakness before finishing third in the Belmont in his bid to win the Triple Crown. As a four-year-old, he has found the board in seven of eight starts but has been off since August 22. Trained by Barclay Tagg, Funny Cide would eclipse $3 million in career earnings with a win in the Gold Cup.
Another possibility for the Gold Cup is Evening Attire. The Patrick Kelly trainee has only one win on the year but it was a good one as he was a five-length winner over Funny Cide in the Grade 2 Saratoga Breedersí Cup Handicap in his last start. Looking for back-to-back wins at the distance, Evening Attire will try to follow in the steps of his father, Black Tie Affair, and post wins in the Hawthorne Gold Cup and Breedersí Cup Classic.
Below are the Nominations and Past Performances for the Hawthorne Gold Cup.
Hawthorne races from September 24 through January 2. Racing is slated for five days a week, Wednesday through Sunday and four days a week in December, Thursday through Sunday with an option to run on Wednesdays. First post daily is 1:10 pm.
