Anthony Morgan Grabs Career Win 9,000 at Hawthorne
STICKNEY, IL -- The illustrious career of driver Anthony Morgan reached another milestone on Sunday at Hawthorne when the 46-year-old Beecher, Illinois native scored his 9,000th career victory, driving home Brian and Kellie to victory in Hawthorne's 11th race.
Brian and Kellie led for most of the race, was passed briefly midstretch by favored Glittering Beaches, but came back to win by a head. That was Morgan's fourth win of the night.
Morgan began his driving career in 1977. He grabbed 15 wins that year from 130 drives. He reached his 1,000th career victory in 1987 but it wasn't until 1993 that Morgan really arrived on the scene, winning 317 races for $1,667,661 for the season. Record years skyrocketed for Morgan after 1993. He won 447 races in 1994, 794 in 1995 and a nation-leading 853 races in 1996.
Morgan is a three-time Harness Track's of America Driver of the Year, earning the title with his 853 wins in 1996, 788 wins in 1997 and again in 2002 when he won 699 races. For his career, Morgan's drives have earned over $58,000,000 and he has gone ten consecutive years posting earnings of over $3,000,000 each year.
In 2004, Hawthorne Race Course is open year-round for full-card simulcasting. Harness racing returned on July 15 as the Suburban Downs at Hawthorne summer harness meet runs 55 consecutive nights through September 7. Thoroughbreds are back in the fall with the Hawthorne fall meet which races from September 24 -- December 31.
