Shakopee, MN -- A record 88 pre-entries have been taken for the sixth running of the six-race, $550,000 Claiming Crown to be held Saturday, July 17 at Canterbury Park in Shakopee, MN.
Leading the way are the 22 pre-entries for the $125,000 Dodge Claiming Crown Emerald. To be run at one mile and one sixteenth on the Canterbury Park turf course, the Emerald was won last by year by Julie Krone and Image for trainer Steve Asmussen, who returns in 2004 with two horses as the nation's leading conditioner by wins.
Also returning is the Claiming Crown's perennial leading trainer Scott Lake, who will attempt to build on his total of six Claiming Crown wins by bringing seven horses, including three entries (Polish Times, Rize, and Spooky Mulder) in the $150,000 Continental Diamond Claiming Crown Jewel. Lake currently ranks second behind Asmussen on the national trainer's list.
Scheduled to appear in the Claiming Crown is the nation's leading rider by wins Rafael Bejarano, who has captured the riding title at both Turfway Park and at the recently completed Churchill Downs meet in 2004. Bejarano is currently riding at Ellis Park. Also scheduled to ride is Tyler Baze, who has earned more than $4 million dollars in 2004 riding primarily on the West coast. Finally, two-time Kentucky Derby winner and 2004 Horse Racing Hall of Fame inductee Kent Desormeaux will make his first ever appearance at Canterbury Park and in the Claiming Crown. Desormeaux has won more than 4,400 races and $170 million in his 17-year career. The three-time Eclipse Award winner is confirmed to ride Waki American in the $100,000 Rapid Transit and Kouri Jill in the $75,000 Glass Slipper.
The first planeload of approximately 18 horses is scheduled to arrive from the Mid-Atlantic circuit on Sunday with a smaller load arriving from California on Tuesday.
The Claiming Crown draw will be held Wednesday morning with post time for the first race on Saturday set for 1:30PM.
