ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (September 15, 2004) -- Apt to Be, who races in the royal blue and gold colors of Arlington Park chairman Richard L. Duchossois, engaged in a stretch long duel with Arbitrate, getting the better of that rival by a nose in the $43,625 Dr. Fager Stakes on Wednesday at Arlington.

The son of Rahy equaled the track record of 1:28 4/5 set by I'll Raise You One in 1987 for the seldom-used 7 furlong-distance. Timed in hundredths, Apt to Be's official clocking was 1:28.81.

The victory Wednesday snapped a five-race winless streak for the Chris Block-trained gelding who ran second in each of his last three trips to the post including the Grade III Hanshin Handicap in May and the $50,000 Cigar Stakes in August. The win was his 10th in 30 starts overall and the $26,175 boosted his career bankroll to $415,072.

Arbitrate, who alternated on the lead with Apt to Be, was valiant in defeat, finishing well clear of third-place finisher Silver Zipper. Discreet Hero, Stormy Impact and Intrinsic Worth completed the order of finish.

Apt to Be, the 8-5 post time favorite, paid $5.20, $3 and $2.10. Arbitrate returned $3.20 and $2.20. Silver Zipper paid $2.20.
