'TAM' WHEELS TO MARIAH'S STORM STAKES VICTORY
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (August 13, 2004) -- Turf Express Inc. and Darrell & Evelyn Yates, Ltd.'s Tamwheel pressed the pace from the outside, took the lead on the second turn and drew away to an easy five-length tally in the $52,400 Mariah's Storm Stakes on Friday at Arlington Park before a crowd of 11,320. Rene Douglas rode the daughter of Gulch who went the nine furlongs on a fast track in 1:50.99.
"She's a racehorse," Douglas exclaimed after the race. "All summer long I've been getting on this horse and Cat (trainer Wayne Catalano) asked my opinion of her. I told him that I thought she was a good one and today she proved it. I was glad to win one for Cat because I think he's a great trainer, one of the best in the country."
Tamwheel sat just off pacesetter Small Promises who led through a half mile in 49.07 seconds. By the time the field had reached the three-quarter mark, Tamwheel was in front, reaching that junction in 1:13.31.
She picked up $31,440 today to boost her seasonal bankroll to $104,240 and her overall earnings to $128,016 from a record of five wins in 12 starts. Sent off as the 19-10 favorite, she paid $5.80, $3.60 and $2.80.
Casual Attitude was second in the six-horse field and returned $6.20 and $3.20. It was another two lengths back to Julie's Prize, who ran third and paid $2.60. Allspice, Small Promises and Hennie's Song completed the order of finish.
