'SALTWATER' RUNS OFF WITH RIBBON VICTORY
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (June 6, 2004) -- Lewis G. Lakin's Saltwater Runner rallied in the center of the track to overtake frontrunner Silver Crown in mid stretch en route to a half-length tally in the $38,000 Ribbon Handicap Sunday at Arlington Park. Rene Douglas rode the daughter of Salt Lake, who covered the six furlongs over a fast track in 1:10.02.
Trained by Bob Holthus, the 3-year-old filly sat off the pace of 22.25 seconds and 45.61 seconds set by longshot Silver Crown before angling wide in the lane to overtake that rival. The win was the third in five starts this year for Saltwater Runner who ran her overall record to five wins from seven starts. With the $22,800 earned for the Ribbon, her bankroll now stands at $87,166.
"This is a nice filly," proclaimed Douglas shortly after the race. "I don't want to jump the gun here but she showed me something a lot of fillies don't have: a lot of class and a lot of guts. She showed me she wanted to get there. She has a lot of talent."
Sent off as the 2-1 second choice in the field of seven sophomore distaffers, Saltwater Runner paid $6.20, $3.40 and $2.40.
Silver Crown was able to hang on for the place. She paid $7.80 and $4. It was another 1¾ lengths back to third-place finisher Home Court, who returned $2.40. Bad Kitty, Bold Bayou, Fashion Girl and Anapest completed the order of finish.
