UP ANCHOR TAKES AWAD HANDICAP
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (June 5, 2004) -- Ralls and Foster LLC's Up Anchor employed ground saving tactics en route to a length and a half victory in the $38,000 Awad Handicap, the live feature at Arlington Park before a crowd of 12,725. Chris Emigh picked up his third win of the afternoon aboard the son of Polish Navy, who covered the "about" one mile distance over yielding turf in 1:39.64.
"I had a rail trip the whole way," said Emigh, who was riding Up Anchor for the first time in the Awad. "There was plenty of room and I felt I had the best horse in the race. I rode him like he was the best horse in the race and it worked out. I was only worried about him getting tired, and he didn't."
The Awad was the first race for the Paul McGee-trained colt since finishing seventh in the Dave Feldman Stakes at Gulfstream Park in January. The win was his third in nine trips to the post and the $22,800 winner's share boosted his earnings to $84,375.
Saltire was second in the nine-horse field, a half length ahead of Marley's Revenge. Pure American, Echota, Primm, Wild Eventure, Respectabeau and Prairie King competed the order of finish.
Up Anchor, the 7-2 second choice in the wagering, paid $9, $4.40 and $4.20. Saltire paid $7 and $6.20. Marley's Revenge returned $5.40.
