INTRINSIC WORTH WINS OPENING DAY FEATURE

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (May 14, 2004) -- Pin Oak Stable LLC's Intrinsic Worth overcame a bad start to come from last at the top of the stretch to win the $38,000 Shecky Greene Handicap by three-quarters of a length at Arlington Park on Friday. The Shecky Greene, for 3-year-old sprinters, was the opening day feature at the suburban Chicago racetrack.

Carlos Marquez Jr. was aboard the Red Ransom colt who covered the six furlongs in a speedy 1:09.96 over a track rated muddy. Sent off as the 5-2 second choice in the 1:09.96 over a track rated muddy, Intrinsic Worth paid $7, $3.60 and $2.80.

The Shecky Greene was the third straight victory and the fourth in nine starts for the Mike Stidham-trained sophomore, who banked $22,800 to boost his earnings into six figures at $110,772.

"He wasn't acting very well in the gate," Marquez said when asked about the awkward start. "When they sprung the latch, he veered to the left a little bit and I had to grab him. I know they were going real fast when I was that far back. He's a come-from-behind horse but not from that far back. When he turned for home and switched to his right lead, he kicked."

Jimmy Cracked Corn was second and paid $3.80 and $2.60. Marley's Revenge ran third and returned $3.

Danieltown, the 2-1 favorite, set very quick fractions, getting the quarter in 21.56 seconds and the half mile in 43.81 seconds before fading to fourth. Jaguar Friend and Quick Action completed the order of finish.

Arlington Park -- the Chicago area's premier Thoroughbred racetrack located in Arlington Heights, Ill. -- will run a 96-day meet in 2004 from Friday, May 14 through Sunday, Sept. 19. Arlington Park, whose parent company is Churchill Downs Incorporated (Nasdaq: CHDN), also operates eight off-track, simulcast-wagering facilities: Trackside Arlington Park (Arlington Heights), Trackside Quad City Downs (East Moline), Trackside Chicago, Trackside McHenry, Trackside Rockford, Trackside Waukegan and Longshots featuring Trackside OTB in South Elgin.
