RECORD-SETTING WAGERING ON 2004 INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL: $17,913,433 TOTAL HANDLE ON ARLINGTON MILLION DAY CARD
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (August 14, 2004) -- The total, all-sources handle on Arlington Park's 12-race card on International Festival of Racing Saturday was a record $17,913,433. The total includes $16,834,166 from the commingled pools, $755,082 from Canada on the 12 races plus $324,185 in France on races 8, 9, 10 and 11, which included Illinois' only three Grade I races: the Beverly D. (race 8), Arlington Million (race 9) and Secretariat Stakes (race 11). The record handle topped the previous record of $15,851,625, established in 2002, by $2,061,808.
On track, the 30,414 in attendance wagered $3,169,851, a $183,606 increase from the 2003 total of $2,986,245. The attendance was the highest since 1991, when 31,179 watched Tight Spot win the 11th running of the Arlington Million, and the eighth highest in history.
A total of $694,555 was wagered on the Arlington Million at the track compared to $570,864 last year, an increase of $123,691. In the commingled pools, Million wagering increased by $903,593 from $3,543,325 in 2003 to $4,446,918 this year. Wagering from Canada and France on the Million itself are not yet available.
Total handle on the Festival Pick 3, composed of the Arlington Million, Beverly D. and Secretariat Stakes, was $225,541.
The NTRA Pick 4, which was bet through NYRA - Saratoga, was $1,208,442 nationwide.
Arlington Park, the Chicago area's premier Thoroughbred racetrack located in Arlington Heights, Ill., is running a 96-day meet in 2004 from Friday, May 14 through Sunday, Sept. 19.
