McMahon wins Royal Glint
McMahon ran wire-to-wire to win the Royal Glint by four lengths, holding off Lil Mephistopheles in the stretch. Favorite Apple Dapple was third.
"Going into the first turn, I was expecting the sprinter (Apple Dapple) to head for the lead, but when I got it and was able to go three quarters in 1:14, I thought we might have a shot," said winning jockey Earlie Fires. "Turning for home, he had a ton left and he's going to turn out being a very nice horse on his career."
Favorite Lil Mephistopheles rallied from last place, but couldn't catch the winner. "No one went out with that horse on the lead," explained jockey Ramsey Zimmerman. "I had nothing to run at."
Apple Dapple was two lengths back of McMahon for most of the race. "The race went pretty much as we expected it to," said jockey Chris Emigh. "We were second early. It was important that we could get him to relax. We just needed to stay close and relaxed. We didn't think we could get past (winner) Mc Mahon early. The race was OK. He got tired in the last eighth. But, hopefully this race set him up for the next one.
Brian Williamson, assistant trainer for Apple Dapple, was asked about the next race. "Hopefully, we're going going into the Jim Edgar Futurity ($100,000, December 23). We won it the last two years. Hopefully this race will have set him up so we can make it three in a row. He was tired coming down the lane but this was his first race around two turns. He should move up from the effort."
