Hawthorne Racecourse Stakes Recap

Lil' Mary's Kitty wins Showtime Deb Stakes

Lil' Mary's Kitty set the pace, then drew off driving to win the Sun Power Stakes by one and one-half lengths today at Hawthorne. The state-bred 2YO fillies ran six furlongs on the dirt.

Dinner in Reno, part of a three-horse Frank Kirby entry, rallied from 7th to take second by a neck. My Carati held third by a neck.

"She's a nice filly. She tries really hard," said Carlos Montalvo, who rode the daughter of Z Z Cat. "She keeps improving. She's going to stay tough against these state breds.

"I had a lot of confidence in her," Montalvo continued. "I didn't worry when she didn't get the lead right from the gate. She went up and took it easily when I asked her. I never had to use her early and only a little at the end."

Jockey Alfredo Juarez Jr., second aboard Dinner In Reno, explained: "She just broke a little slow. You never know with these first timers how they are going to break. She tried to get out a little bit but she straightened out and came running in the stretch. She did pretty good. This was the first time I was on her. I was a little bit surprised at the way she accelerated. She might have won if she had a better break."

Lil' Mary's Kitty paid $7.20, $3.40 and $2.60; Dinner in Reno paid $2.10 and $2.10; My Carati paid $3.00.
