Hawthorne Racecourse Stakes Recap

Beware Avalanche takes Glassy Dip Stakes

Favored Beware Avalanche won the $40,000 Glassy Dip Stakes at Hawthorne today by 1 3/4 lengths, covering five furlongs on the turf in :58.09. Distinctive Mr. B held on for second, while Jolie's Song rallied for third.

Only You set the pace, pressured by Distinctive Mr. B. who took over in the stretch. "We ran good," said Randy Meier aboard Distinctive Mr. B. "I was told to lay off the pace a bit and try to wait until the 3/16th pole before making my move. We got to wait until the eighth. We just got outrun."

Beward Avalanche was midpack for most of the race, then angled out for his drive. "The two horse (Lil Charlie Too) broke into me a little bit so I just tucked up along the fence," said winning jockey E.T Baird. "We tracked the pace but I was confident that he could run them down. He responded well when he switched to his right lead and just took off. He's a nice horse. He does everything pretty easy."

Jolie's Song rallied from sixth to get the show. Only You faded to fourth. Tic N Tin, third in last week's Lightning Jet Stakes, was close up then weakened to fifth. Silver Zipper, River Sounds, and Lil Charlie Too completed the order of finish.

Beware Avalanche paid $4.60, $2.80 and $2.10; Distinctive Mr. B paid $5.20 and $4.20; and Jolie's Song paid $5.40.

In other racing news today, leading trainer Tom Tomillo won two races: the eighth with Embassy City and the ninth with R. Little Redhead.
