Nite Dreamer, Dust On The Bottle Head Nominations for Carey Memorial

Nominations for the Grade 3 Robert F. Carey Memorial closed on Saturday October 14 with some familiar names nominated. The one mile turf event for three-year-olds and up includes eight graded stakes placed horses within the 27 nominees.

Heading the list is Niall O'Callaghan trained Nite Dreamer. A winner five times in thirty-two career starts, Nite Dreamer has taken on some tough company in his career. In June of 1999, Nite Dreamer took on the likes of Victory Gallop, Silver Charm and Connecting Terms in the Stephen Foster Handicap at Churchill, finishing second behind Victory Gallop. He followed that with a Grade 3 victory at Prairie Meadows and closed out his 1999 season with a third place finish in the Grade 2 Clark Handicap at Churchill. In 2000, he's won only once as he drew away to win the Sportsman's Park Breeders' Cup Handicap, but he looks to the Carey as a possible spot to get back on the right track.

Not as surprising in this spot as he was in the Gold Cup, Dust On the Bottle is another very noticeable nomination to the Carey. He entered the Grade 3 Gold Cup off of a pair of non-graded stakes wins and was given little chance to hit the board. But surprising almost everyone, the Glenn Hild trainee burst through on the rail and pulled off the upset victory at 38-1. A winner of three straight, Dust On the Bottle is definitely in top form.

Another horse rounding into form is Minor Wisdom. This four-year-old trained by Richard Scherer knows this Hawthorne turf course well. In 1999, he pulled off a two-and-a-quarter length victory in the Hawthorne Derby. On October 7 of this year ran a strong second in the $40,000 Overage Stakes, losing to Carey nominee Associate by a head.

Billy Mott has a pair ready for the Carey. His four-year-old, Glick, is on a three-race win streak, most recently coming home first in the Kentucky Cup Mile Handicap. If its not Glick that gets the job done, it may be Strategic Mission. Running and winning only once as a four-year-old, Strategic Mission has hit the board in five of seven starts in 2000, losing by just a neck in the Shadwell at Keeneland in his last start.
