Jockey Juarez injured, Frank Arsenault Memorial preview
Alfredo Juarez Jr., schooling a 2-year-old for trainer Tom Swearingen, was slightly injured early Monday morning in a starting gate mishap. Juarez was taken to Loyola University Hospital Sports Clinic where he was examined and released. All X-rays came back negative.
According to Juarez's agent, Tom Morgan, the jockey had a slight laceration on his right shin bone. He took off his Monday mounts. With Tuesday being dark, and having been named on no mounts Wednesday, Alfredo will have three full days to recover. He's expected to return on Thursday when he's been named to ride six mounts on the nine-race card.
Frank Arsenault Memorial Breeders' Cup Stakes
Betty Massey & Martin Racing LLC's Mr. Miesque tops the list of probables in the Frank Arsenault Memorial Breeders' Cup. The Arsenault, a one-mile turf race for 2-year-olds, will be run on Saturday, October 14, 2000. The race closed October 4 with 24 nominations.
Mr. Miesque, trained by Keith Desormeaux, was narrowly beaten in the $100,000 El Joven, on the turf, in his most recent appearance. Gift Of The Eagle, owned by Raymond H. Cottrell, and trained by Kenneth G. McPeek, could be the main competition. "Gift" finished second in the $200,000 MGD Cradle at River Downs two starts back, then dusted a good allowance field at Turfway in his most recent start. He'll be trying turf for the first time.
