Hawthorne Gold Cup Update

Nominations for the Grade 2 $500,000 Guaranteed Hawthorne Gold Cup closed Wednesday with 26 nominations. Multiple stakes winner and millionaire Ecton Park heads the list of nominations. Other listed as possible for the "Gold Cup" are Aptitude, second in the 2000 Grade 1 Kentucky Derby and Belmont; Hightori, third in the $6 Million Dubai World Cup; and Skimming, another runner from the barn of Robert Frankel (along with Aptitude), who won last year's Grade 1 Pacific Classic.

But, they'll all have to take on Richard Trebat's Chicago Six, trained by Jere R. Smith Sr., who has been on an absolute tear, winning last five and 10 of his last 15 starts. It promises to be a great race.

Pick 6

One winning ticket picked all winners in Friday's Pick 6 races. The winning ticket paid $76,926.80.

You have one more chance. Hawthorne's Director of Operations, Thomas Carey III released this statement: "Going into the meet, we wanted to give those who wager on Hawthorne Race Course many opportunities to make more money. By lowering the takeout and offering this wager, we've given them many chances daily. However, the guaranteed Pick 6 pool will be offered one final time."

The lowered takeout will continue through the end of the meet and the Pick 6 will still be offered though without the $100,000 guarantee.

Nick Meza Update

Nick Meza barely skipped a beat after his mount, Cachanilla, broke down badly in Friday's sixth race. Meza immediately got control of the horse until help came. Though he was taken off his mount in the seventh, it was only for precautionary reasons and he was back in the irons, as scheduled, in the ninth and tenth races. Pound for pound, these riders have to be the best athletes in the world.

Help us bring "Joy to the World"

Don't forget! Tomorrow, Saturday May 12, Three Dog Night will be performing at Hawthorne Race Course. American English, the talented Beatles cover band, will be the opening act. This event is free with a paid clubhouse admission
