Hawthorne Derby nominations
Nominations for the $250,000 Guaranteed Grade 3 Hawthorne Derby, a one mile and one eighth turf event, to be run Saturday, May 12, closed Wednesday with 27 nominations, pending late mail.
Likely favorite, Proud Man, winner in five of six turf events, including the Grade 3 Everglades, the Grade 3 Palm Beach, and the Grade 3 Tropical Park Derby, all in Florida, is expected to arrive at Hawthorne on Thursday, May 10.
Fan Club's Mister made the most of his turf debut with a three-quarter-length victory in a turf allowance race on Hawthorne's opening day.
McHenry Co Kid, who finished third behind Fan Club's Mister, bled in the race and will be ineligible to run in the Hawthorne Derby.
Opening Day facts
Eight jockeys accounted for the nine wins on Hawthorne's opening day card. Shane Laviolette did have a riding double; Explosive Wish in the third and Golden Antigua in the Nicole Stakes
$100,000 Guaranteed Pick 6
Hawthorne's $100,000 Guaranteed Pick 6 was hit for the second straight day, and it paid $25,613.60 on each of the 3 $1 tickets that picked all six winners. But, now for the best news: in case you weren't one of the lucky 3 on Friday, you will have another opportunity to win on Saturday.
Hawthorne's first post is 1:10 p.m. The Pick 6 starts at Race 3 and continues through Race 8. Can't win if you don't play.
