Goodbye Old Friend
Hawthorne Race Course, prior to the races today, requested a moment of silence to honor the life of longtime turf writer and racetrack handicapper Dave Feldman, who passed away late Monday afternoon. Joe Kelly, track bugler, played "Taps."
Earlie Fires Elected Into Hall of Fame
Veteran jockey Earlie Fires has finally been inducted into the Hall of Fame. Fires, a native of Riverdale, Arkansas, was born into a prominent racing family in 1947. He has been a fixture on the Chicagoland racing scene for years. By the end of the 2000 racing season, Fires had accumulated in excess of $77,000,000 in purse money won and scored with 6,136 winners. He has been leading rider at a number of tracks, including Arlington Park, Churchill Downs, Keeneland, Gulfstream Park, and Tropical-at-Calder.
In 1983, Fires sets a record at Arlington for riding seven winners from eight mounts. He led all apprentices in 1965.
Quote from Nicole Stakes, run at Hawthorne - 5/01/01
Shane Laviolette (jockey, winner Golden Antigua) "There were a few speed horses in there and I just waited for them to come back to me. On the turf, many horses usually fan out wide turning for home and I was just able to wait and luckily I found a hole inside."
Guaranteed Pick 6 Hit on Opening Day
Hawthorne Race Course's innovative $100,000 Guaranteed Pick 6 was hit on opening day paying $11,762.00 on a $2 ticket. There were 13 winning $1 combinations sold but since it was a $2 bet, at least one combination was sold for $3.
Going into the last race, there were two horses who would have ensured a carryover in the Pick 6. One of them, Diablos First Lady, finished second at almost 22-1.
$44,154 was bet into the Pick 6.
The $100,000 Guarantee will resume on Friday when live racing resumes at Hawthorne.
