2001 Hawthorne stakes schedule announced
STICKNEY, IL -- Racing Secretary Gary M. Duch and Director of Operations, Thomas F. Carey III have announced the proposed Stakes schedule for Hawthorne's upcoming 2001 racing meets. With split racing meets for 2001, Hawthorne's stakes have been strategically placed to once again promote their national prominence.
In Hawthorne's spring meet, six stakes events will take place over the six-week period. While racing in the midst of the Triple Crown races, Hawthorne will be highlighted during this time as well. The Saturday following the Kentucky Derby, three-year-old turf participants will get their chance in the 37th running of the Grade 3 Hawthorne Derby. Last year's Derby proved to be a top race of the year as Rumsonontheriver grabbed a dead-heat victory with Hymn.
The following weekend, one the top races nationally will be run as the Hawthorne Gold Cup will be run for the 65th time. A race that had recently been a stepping-stone for the Breeders' Cup when placed in early October was given it's due when the graded stakes committee upgraded the race's status to a Grade 2 event. To be run on Preakness day, the $500,000 guaranteed event for three-year-olds and up will be an early showcase for the top handicap horses in 2001.
As a race that gained its prominence when run in October, the placing of the Gold Cup wasn't a tough decision for the spring meeting. "When determining where to place the Gold Cup in 2001, this was an easy decision for us," stated Thomas F. Carey III. "This is a day where many top three-year-olds will be showcased in Baltimore, but Hawthorne Race Course will be another option for three-year-old horses as well as the focal point for top older handicap competitors."
In the following two weekends, three $50,000 added events will be run, with two of those two be contested over the turf course.
Closing for the spring on June 10, racing resumes again on October 31, and Hawthorne's turf course will again be at the forefront on November 3. In an event for three-year-olds and upward, the $150,000 guaranteed Robert F. Carey Memorial Handicap will be contested at one mile over the turf.
The following Saturday, November 10, will once again showcase the top talent in Illinois as four $75,000 guaranteed stakes will take place, solely for Illinois conceived and or Foaled thoroughbreds. And to close out the year, there will be a $100,000 stakes race run on each of the first four Saturday's in December.
In 2001, Hawthorne Race Course runs from May 1 - June 10 and October 31 - December 31. The proposed 2001 Hawthorne stakes schedule follows:
