Barry T. & Sandra Buchholz's Cashel Castle, unbeaten in two Illinois starts, terrorized a good group in the $100,000 Hoosier Derby on Saturday night. This diminutive son of Silver Ghost was content to track the pace in the early going but when jockey Eddie Razo tapped him once coming out of the turn it was game, set, and match. He drew off by over eight lengths. This little guy certainly looked like a "big" horse to his fans.

The November finals of Hawthorne's Handicapping Contest were completed late Saturday afternoon. Taking home the $1,000 betting voucher was Frank Such. The $500 second prize went to Al Baldonado. Third prize of a $250 voucher went to Violet Olivieri. And fourth prize, dinner for four in Hawthorne's Gold Cup Dining Room went to Dorwana Townsend.

Schwan Song

After a relatively quiet year, trainer Emmagene Schwan won two races in two days. She won the fifth on Saturday with Rose of Savannah ($15.60) and really lit up the toteboard on Sunday with Family Covenant ($91.00) in the eighth.

Strange Days

Hawthorne's nine races were won by nine different trainers and nine different jockeys. Scary!
